What to See in Croatia? TOP 7 Spots in Istria

April 10, 2025

5 min

If you think Croatia is just about beaches and crowds, let us surprise you. Istria, the triangle-shaped peninsula on the Adriatic Sea, hides places you simply shouldn’t miss. It’s a perfect destination for those who want more than just a vacation — and who love coming back home with stories. Here are 7 must-see Spots in Istria that you can discover thanks to the Findia travel app.

These Spots were added by Travel Creators: caravelling, europa_od_a_do_zet, mejulietteee.

1. Where the Light of Love Still Shines – Bašanija

At the very western tip of Croatia, near the Slovenian border, stands the oldest working lighthouse on the Adriatic coast. It was also the first in Europe to be powered by coal gas. Built by Austrian Count Metternich for a Croatian woman he met at a ball in Vienna, the lighthouse was supposed to be their future home. Sadly, she fell ill and passed away before it was completed. The count never returned.

Today, the lighthouse is still active — and you can even stay overnight in its historic interior, with a sea view. Walk around, and you’ll find remains of Roman villas and ancient ruins scattered nearby.

2. A Fortress Full of Stories – Kaštel in Pula

On a hill that’s protected Pula for centuries stands the mighty fortress known as Kaštel — from the Venetian word for “castle.” Built using stones from a Roman theatre nearby, the fortress now offers stunning views of the port and town. Inside, it houses the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria, showing the region’s rich history — from ancient Histrians to the Roman Empire and beyond. A perfect stop for anyone who loves battles, legends, and military architecture.

3. The Smallest Town in the World – Hum

With just 52 residents and two cobbled streets, Hum holds the title of the world’s smallest town. Legend says it was built by giants using the last stones left over from building the rest of Istria. Local elections are still held here using wooden sticks for voting. The town sits along the Glagolitic Alley, celebrating the oldest known Slavic script. Visit Hum, and you’ll feel like time stopped — but the stories live on.

4. A Stone Church Full of Wonders – Bale

On the Mon Perin hill stands a church that has witnessed over 1,000 years of history. The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built over the ruins of an old basilica — and it’s actually the fifth church raised on the same spot. Inside, you’ll find a 700-year-old cross and a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary.
According to locals, when a terrible drought hit Bale, people prayed in front of the statue — and rain fell only over their town. Today, Bale is quiet and peaceful, but it holds onto a deep sense of mystery and wonder.

5. Wild Beauty on the Edge – Cape Kamenjak

At the southern tip of the peninsula, Cape Kamenjak is a paradise of nature. It’s raw, rugged, and beautiful — with 30 kilometers of coastline, hidden coves, sea caves, and over 600 plant species (including 30 types of orchids!).
You’ll also find traces of ancient Roman villas, dinosaur tracks, and underwater ruins. Swim, snorkel, bike, or just relax in the famous Safari Bar, hidden in the greenery and styled like a jungle. This is Istria at its wildest.

6. A Hidden Lane in Vrsar

Vrsar is known for its Roman past and for being a stop on Casanova’s journeys, but one street stands out for those who pay attention. The blue-shutter lane is a peaceful spot in the old town — where stone houses with bright shutters create a postcard-perfect scene. No signs. No crowds. Just stillness and charm. Walk here and feel the spirit of real Istria — unfiltered and authentic.

7. Rovinj – A Town to Fall in Love With

From afar, it looks like a painting. Colorful houses rise from the sea, narrow alleys climb toward the hilltop church of Saint Euphemia — the town’s patron. Rovinj is one of the most beautiful cities in Croatia: romantic, creative, and full of life.
It’s home to three unique beaches, open-air festivals, craft markets, and concerts. On Grisia Street, meet local artists and find one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Rovinj is more than a destination — it’s a feeling.
