1. The Heart of Sicilian Baroque – Piazza Duomo in Catania

After a devastating earthquake over 300 years ago, Catania slowly rose from the ruins, and Piazza Duomo became a symbol of its rebirth. The square blends white limestone and black lava stone, creating a striking contrast. In the center stands the Fontana dell’Elefante — a black lava elephant carrying an Egyptian obelisk, the city’s symbol of protection. Be sure to visit the Cathedral of Saint Agatha, rebuilt after the earthquake, where the tomb of composer Vincenzo Bellini lies. Piazza Duomo is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s the perfect spot to feel the rhythm of everyday life in Catania and experience the city’s baroque soul.

2. Europe’s Highest Active Volcano – Mount Etna

This is probably the most famous place in Sicily. Majestic Etna rises to about 3,400 meters, and its shape is constantly changing. It’s not just a natural wonder — it’s a key part of Sicilian mythology, once believed to be the forge of Hephaestus, the god of fire. Hiking its slopes or witnessing volcanic activity up close is an experience you will never forget. Etna is home to dozens of side craters, the stunning Valle del Bove, and fertile fields that produce some of the island’s finest wines. Recent eruptions remind visitors that Etna is not a museum of nature — it’s a living, breathing force. No matter the season, visiting Mount Etna lets you feel the true power of the earth.

3. Ancient Theater with a View – Teatro Antico di Taormina

The theater in Taormina, built by the Greeks centuries before our era and later expanded by the Romans, is breathtaking not just because of its architecture. Its location — high above the sea with views of Mount Etna and the Ionian coastline — makes it one of the most stunning ancient theaters in the world. To this day, concerts and performances are held here, offering a chance to feel the spirit of ancient art. The audience area once held over 5,000 people, and the partially restored stage lets you imagine the shows that played here. Over time, the theater served many purposes — from dramas to gladiator battles. Walking its marble steps is like traveling through two thousand years of Sicilian history.

4. History and Nature Combined in Scopello

In Scopello, Torre della Tonnara and Tonnara di Scopello form a fascinating site connected to Sicily’s ancient tuna fishing tradition. The defensive tower once protected the tonnara — the tuna processing center. Carefully restored warehouses, workshops, and fishermen’s houses now surround crystal-clear waters and spectacular rock formations called Faraglioni. Walking around this historic complex is like stepping back in time to when life depended on the sea. Today, it’s one of Sicily’s most beautiful and peaceful coastal spots.

5. Spanish Barracks and Coastal Views – Quartiere Spagnolo in Erice

Quartiere Spagnolo is an unfinished Spanish military barracks located in the fairy-tale-like town of Erice. The barracks were originally built to prevent soldiers from being housed in private homes but were eventually abandoned. Today, the massive stone walls and breathtaking coastal views create an unforgettable atmosphere. Inside, you’ll find a museum that showcases traditional crafts and the life of Sicilian fishermen. The exhibitions let you step into the daily world of people who lived here centuries ago. Visiting Quartiere Spagnolo offers not only a glimpse into history but also one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Sicily.

Quartiere Spagnolo to niedokończone hiszpańskie koszary w bajkowym Erice. Koszary budowane, by chronić mieszkańców przed koniecznością kwaterowania żołnierzy w domach, ostatecznie zostały porzucone.

6. A Theater Among the Stars – Teatro di Andromeda

Hidden among the Sicani Mountains, the Teatro di Andromeda is a masterpiece created by shepherd and artist Lorenzo Reina over many decades. The 108 stone seats mirror the stars of the Andromeda constellation, and the stage is aligned with the sun during solstices. This place is perfect for travelers seeking deep, almost mystical experiences far from crowded paths. Teatro di Andromeda is not a traditional theater — it’s a space where art meets the cosmos. On the summer solstice, a ray of sunlight shines through a specially designed window, creating an extraordinary light show. Silence, space, and the surrounding landscape make every moment here feel magical.

7. A Guardian of History by the Sea – Castello Arabo-Normanno

The Arab-Norman Castle in Castellammare del Golfo stands proudly on a rocky point over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Originally built by the Arabs and expanded by the Normans, the castle once served as a key military fortress protecting the harbor. Today, its halls house a museum that presents the history of the town, traditional crafts, and the region’s maritime heritage. Exploring the castle feels like stepping through different eras — from Arab rule to modern times. It’s also the perfect spot to pause and admire one of the most beautiful views of the Sicilian coast.
