1. Nine Arches Bridge – a true Sri Lankan classic

Located near Ella, the Nine Arches Bridge is one of the most iconic views in Sri Lanka. Built entirely from stone and bricks without using steel, the bridge connects two mountain train stations. Its photos with a train crossing are known to almost every traveler. But the real magic isn’t just the pictures – it’s the sound of the train echoing through the hills, and the feeling of standing on a piece of colonial history in a tropical setting. The bridge was completed during World War I, and according to local stories, a Sri Lankan builder finished the project when British engineers left.

2. Pidurangala Rock – views, history, and peace

Located right next to the famous Lion Rock (Sigiriya), Pidurangala Rock is a quieter and, for many, more spiritual alternative. The hike takes about 40 minutes and leads through the ruins of an ancient monastery. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view – especially stunning at sunrise. Halfway up, you’ll find a 12.5-meter-long Reclining Buddha statue carved into the rock, dating back over 1,000 years. It’s a place for photographers, nature lovers, and those who appreciate silence and reflection. Interestingly, “Pidurangala” means “offered pile of gold,” and legend says monks were relocated here by King Kassapa as a trade for the Sigiriya rock.

3. Lipton’s Seat – tea empire with a view

This is the very spot where Sir Thomas Lipton would look out over his tea plantations and plan his global expansion. The best time to visit is early morning when mist hangs above the valleys and the light creates a magical glow. Nearby is the Dambatenne Tea Factory, which you can visit to learn about the tea-making process and enjoy a fresh cup straight from the source. The factory has been running for over 130 years and was a key part of Lipton’s plan to make Ceylon tea famous worldwide.

4. Minneriya National Park – meet the giants

During the dry season (July to October), Minneriya hosts one of nature’s greatest spectacles – “The Gathering”, where hundreds of wild Asian elephants come together around the Minneriya Tank. It’s the largest elephant gathering of its kind in the world. The park is also home to deer, crocodiles, monkeys, and many bird species. A jeep safari here is a must for anyone who wants to feel the wild spirit of Sri Lanka.

5. Diyaluma Falls – a waterfall you can swim in

The second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka (220 meters) is already impressive from below, but the real adventure begins at the top. After about a 30-minute hike, you’ll reach natural pools carved into the rock by flowing water. It’s one of the few places where you can swim with a view over valleys and green hills. The waterfall is fed by the Punagala Oya River, and the rock formations create tiered pools – some right on the edge of the cliff. A perfect mix of nature, excitement, and relaxation.

6. Buduruwagala – a rock full of mysteries

This group of Buddha statues carved into a rock face is lesser known but absolutely fascinating. The main standing Buddha is 16 meters tall and surrounded by six other figures from the Mahāyāna tradition – rarely found in Sri Lanka. One mystery is the oily substance that seeps from a small niche near the statue’s foot – no one knows where it comes from. Buduruwagala offers not only historic and religious value but also a peaceful, mystical vibe. The statues are hidden in the jungle, and the quiet walk there makes the visit feel almost meditative.

7. Hiriketiya Beach – surf and serenity

This tiny bay on Sri Lanka’s southern coast is a dream for anyone seeking a laid-back, soulful place. Hiriketiya attracts surfers, yoga lovers, and fans of slow travel. You can learn to surf in the bay, take yoga classes with ocean views, and enjoy local Sri Lankan food in cozy beach cafes. It’s the perfect spot to feel the island vibe without crowds or over-commercialization. Nearby, don’t miss Blue Beach Island – a hidden islet connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of sand. It’s an ideal place for a romantic sunset walk.
